An Evening of Storytelling with Mike McCarthy of Rathcroghan Visitor Centre
The genesis for this show grew organically over several years, rooted in Ireland’s rich storytelling tradition. Through his work, Mike was regularly invited by organisations such as Fáilte Ireland, Western Development Commission, and local authorities to share stories, especially those connected to the legendary Queen Medb, at festivals and events across County Roscommon.
Those repeated requests sparked the idea of developing something more substantial; an evening dedicated to storytelling. That vision came to life with Who Shot Queen Medb? which premiered at Roscommon Arts Centre in August 2025.
Following the strong response and positive feedback from audiences, Mike is now bringing the show on the road—sharing these powerful, entertaining, and distinctly Irish tales with audiences across the country.
Mike McCarthy has worked for over a decade as a Tour Guide, Research Assistant, and Deputy Manager of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre — the home of Queen Medb herself. He has been telling her story in halls, lecture theatres, and on top of ancient ráthanna for years. He is the author of numerous papers pertaining to Rathcroghan and Queen Medb, and is the co-author of Slí Seandálaíochta Ráth Cruachan — The Rathcroghan Archaeological Trail and Rathcroghan — The Guidebook.
