Join us for a journey through a hidden world of glowing life that surrounds us all, yet very few of us have ever seen. Welcome to the world of biofluorescence, one of nature’s best-kept secrets.

Watch the forest paths and trees light up with glowing mushrooms on a fluorescent fungi foray. Discover the biofluorescent colours of mushrooms, as well as the bizarre shapes and forms they take. Biofluorescence in mushrooms comes in a full rainbow of colours, and in many cases can be a very handy ID tool.

Biofluorescence is the absorption of light at one wavelength followed by its reemission at a different wavelength. Shine the right type of UV light on the world, and it glows back at you in a vibrant display of colour.

With UV torches provided, we will venture into the darkness to witness a stunning display of biofluorescent organisms in their natural habitat. We will be exploring a wide range of plants, animals, and weather and conditions permitting, fungi.

This guided walk is suitable for anyone aged 12 years and above, all children must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs allowed. Please come prepared with warm clothing as the pace of the walk is slow. We recommend sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven, and wearing trousers to avoid stinging nettles. Safety glasses will be provided and must be worn throughout the walk for your protection.

Please note we will not cancel the event due to rain, only if there are dangerously high winds so please come prepared accordingly. Rainfall and water enhance the experience, making for ideal conditions for a Biofluorescent night walk.

Access & Facilities

BY CAR - From Glasgow, take the A81 to Aberfoyle, then the A821 over the Duke’s Pass and travel through Brig o’ Turk to the car park. Should the Duke’s Pass be closed due to weather, follow the A81 from Aberfoyle through Port of Menteith and into Callander.

From Edinburgh, head west to junction 10 at Stirling then take the A84 to Callander. Continue for 1.6km (1 mile) north to Kilmahog, then turn left onto the A821 to Little Druim car park, 7.6km (4.7 miles) on the left. Lendrick Hill car park is a further 0.8km (0.5 miles) on the right

BY TRAIN or BUS - The nearest train station is Bridge of Allan, 29km (18 miles) from the wood. There is another train station in Dunblane, 31 km (19 miles) from the wood.

Unfortunately, there are no bus stops within 8km (5 miles) of the wood but there are buses to Callander from Stirling and to Aberfoyle from Glasgow & Stirling (Callander and Aberfoyle and 9.6km/6 miles and 12.8km/8 miles away respectively). You can also pre-book Demand-Responsive Transport which operates all year round.

BY BIKE - You can cycle to Brig o’ Turk from Callander on the Great Trossachs Forest path and/or National Cycle Network (number 7), along the south side of Loch Venachar.

ACCESS NOTES -

We will start at the Visitor Gateway in the Lendrick Hill car park. There are low-level routes on surfaced paths over undulating terrain, partially surfaced paths which include some short, steep sections.

Several of the steeper routes around the wood can be slippery especially when wet. Other than the waymarked trails, the trail entrances and paths are generally narrow. There is one additional gate if following the edge of the wood from Dunollie Castle through the field.

TOILETS - There are toilets located in the Visitor Gateway.
