One day, women-only navigation course for members of Scottish Hill Runners (SHR), covering the skills necessary for running in the mountains
SHR SUPPORTS NAVIGATION SKILLS FOR WOMEN
On the back of a recent survey (Women’s Participation in Hill Racing), Scottish Hill Runners (SHR) will be financially supporting the delivery of 3 navigation courses for women, one each in the North, East and West of Scotland. Girls on Hills successfully bid to run these and will deliver the courses in three locations; Crianlarich, Aviemore and Edinburgh. Please make sure you are booking the correct date and location.
THE COURSE
Self-navigating in the hills can seem pretty straightforward when following other runners or when the weather is fine but what happens when runners are few and far between, when the visibility is poor or if what you see in front of you doesn't match the map? These issues and more can catch us out as runners in the hills, denting our confidence to explore new areas and impacting our performance in self-navigation races.
This one day course for SHR members will introduce basic map and compass skills that will give you the confidence to run solo, off the trails and in poor visibility. We will cover simple timing and pacing strategies and discuss macro-navigational racing strategies for mountain marathons, fell racing or personal mountain running adventures. We'll also learn to use a thumb-compass, navigate on the move, keep track of where you and relocate effectively - just in case the wheels come off!
This course is for women who run at all levels (and who are SHR members). You do not have to be a fast or experienced hill runner to participate. Some prior experience of using a map/compass is helpful but you don't need to be an expert to come along! Pace will be sociable and the focus will be learning new skills. You will be guided by Girls on Hills' guides Rosie Watson/Arwen Darlington, who are competitive fell runners with an orienteering background and are summer Mountain Leader qualified.
YOUR COMPASS
This event is also supported by brasnd-partners SILVA and HARVEY maps. As part of our partnership, we will be extending you our exclusive 30% off discount on compasses upon registration.
The SILVA Expedition 4 is the compass that we recommend for our course (purchase is optional). You will need a compass for the course however, and if you’d like to try one out before buying then we can lend you an Expedition 4 for the day. Maps will be also be provided (HARVEY maps) and a 10% dicsount code provided.
We will also be using the SILVA Arc Jet thumb-compass as part of our course (we will provide these for you to use). If you enjoy the experience of using this compass, you can purchase your own here: https://silvasweden.uk/products/arc-jet
BOOKING
The cost is subsidised by SHR and covers guiding and instruction, but does not include any accommodation/meals, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own.
Girls on Hills Ltd will email you with final details (times, places and parking etc) on the Monday of the week of your event with us. You will also receive a full kit list re what to wear and bring with you on the day.
If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please get in touch at info@girlsonhills.com or see www.girlsonhills.com/faqs
CANCELLATIONS
Please note that these subsidised places are strictly limited. Therefore if you are not able to attend, please cancel your place in advance (as soon as possible) to free-up space for those on the waiting list.
