What to Expect

This event offers a unique chance to experience coastal restoration activities first-hand while learning more about the future of our coastline.

🦪 Oyster Monitoring Demonstration

Discover how native oyster restoration is helping to improve biodiversity, water quality, and coastal resilience. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how oysters are monitored as part of the Wild Oysters Project, including oyster health checks, biodiversity net surveys, and habitat monitoring techniques. You'll also have the opportunity to collect, identify and record marine species, such as crabs, shrimp and small fish, to better understand the wildlife associated with oyster habitats. No previous experience is needed.

🌿 Guided Seaweed Pressing Workshop

Learn about the fascinating world of seaweeds, their ecological importance, and how they can be identified and preserved. Create your own pressed seaweed specimen to take home. All materials will be provided, and no prior knowledge is required.

🌊 Stronger Shores Presentation

After the activities, you'll hear about the work of Stronger Shores along the North East coast, including research into the role of habitats such as native oyster reefs, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows in helping to reduce coastal erosion and flood risk, while delivering wider environmental and social benefits.

🤝 Informal Business Networking & South Tyneside Pledge

Over a complimentary lunch, connect with businesses from across South Tyneside and the wider region. You'll also have the opportunity to meet the South Tyneside Pledge Support Officer and find out how your organisation can join a growing network of businesses committed to supporting the local economy, reducing inequalities, lowering carbon emissions, and enhancing civic pride.

Thanks to funding from Stronger Shores, this event is free to attend and includes lunch and refreshments. Places are limited, so please reserve a space only if you intend to participate.
