The Sea Rangers event on 12 September 2026 will take place at Whitburn Bents car park in Sunderland. It offers hands-on workshops for those aged 10 to 18 concerning the North East shoreline. Entry is free.
Dive into coastal adventures! Hands‑on workshops for ages 10–18 to explore, protect & celebrate the North East shoreline.
The sessions — part of a joint project between Durham Wildlife Trust and UK marine charity Sea Changers — bring 13 coastal adventures to locations along the Durham coast.
Young people will dive into shoreline surveys (including rockpooling), take part in cetacean and bird counts, get hands‑on with habitat management, and tackle litterpicks. Each activity helps participants reconnect with nature and each other, boosting wellbeing, confidence and a sense of coastal pride.
The first session will take us to Whitburn Bents to explore the precious habitat of the shoreline while the late summer seas are still warm enough to house sea-life close to the shore.
We will conduct a rockpool survey to look for a range of marine life that dwells in the rock pools around the tidal strand-line. Likely finds will include anemones, crustaceans, fish and a selection of invertebrates.
Other sessions planned through to next year will include: sea mammal surveys, bird surveys, shark and ray eggcases surveys, habitat management, litterpicks and beachcleans
What to bring:
Comfortable outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather on the day and sturdy footwear.
Booking & safety:
Booking required via this website or Eventbrite.
Sessions are inclusive however these session require attendees to be able to walk approx. 200m to the rock line and to access the rock pools there.
