What is Alexithymia?

Alexithymia is a trait that affects a person's ability to:

Identify their own emotions.

Describe feelings to others.

Differentiate emotions from physical sensations.

Understand and interpret emotions in themselves and sometimes others.

People with alexithymia do experience emotions, but they may struggle to recognise, label, or communicate them effectively.

Alexithymia is not a mental health diagnosis in itself but is commonly associated with:

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

ADHD

Anxiety disorders

Depression

Trauma experiences

Neurological conditions
