About This Event

The 'Woodworking Workshop: Timber Framing' workshop will be held at Avalon Archaeology in Wells on 11 September 2026. The event will feature a workshop on timber framing and tickets cost £180.00.

Spend two days immersed in the world of timber framing! Learn the process of turning timber hewn with axes into a functional building.

Spend two days immersed in the world of timber framing! Learn the process of turning timber hewn with axes into a functional cruck-framed building. This will cover all the basics of laying out, scribing and cutting an array of joints with the ultimate goal of creating a structure to be raised on the weekend.

We’ll be sticking to hand tools and explore what people in the past used plus how they are used. This will include axes, chisels and saws. Plus we’ll delve into how our early medieval ancestors marked up and measured out frames.

This course will be ran by Marc Cox of Newhaven Coppice, Tom Gallon of Bourne Valley Timber Frames and David Wilson of High Elms Timberworks. All three have worked on a variety of projects across the UK and Europe both independently and as part of the Carpenters Fellowship and Charpentiers Sans Frontiers.

This course follows on from our Woodworking Week in April 2026, where the first frame was cut and all the timbers hewn. Join us on the Sunday for the raising!

No experience necessary, but a general level of fitness is required due to this being a very physical activity.

Tea & Coffee and refreshments provided.
