About This Event

Suw Charman-Anderson will discuss Ada Lovelace's contributions to computing and the importance of gender equity in STEM during this workshop.

Suw Charman-Anderson, founder of Ada Lovelace Day, will talk about Lovelace’s vision, celebrating women in STEM and gender equity at work.

In 1843, Ada Lovelace became the first person to publish what we would now call a computer program. Nearly two centuries later, she has become a figurehead for women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Suw Charman-Anderson, the founder of Ada Lovelace Day, will talk about Lovelace’s visionary understanding of one of the earliest computers, Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, and about the importance of celebrating the achievements of women in STEM every year. She will also talk about the barriers to gender equity in the workplace and ask what can we do to create real, lasting change.

Suw Charman-Anderson is an entrepreneur, author and campaigner for digital rights as well as the founder of Ada Lovelace Day, the annual global celebration of women in STEM. Following her receipt of an honorary degree from Royal Holloway in July 2026, we are delighted to welcome Suw back to Royal Holloway for this special lecture on the day after Ada Lovelace Day.
