Jack Pridham Memorial Lecture - From DNA to diversity: a tale of genes, genomes, mammals and moths

DNA evolves and animal diversity evolves, but can we relate one to the other? The science of evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) tries to make this link. For many years, we tackled this link through analysis of our favourite genes. With the advent of genome sequencing, however, we realized we had been missing part of the picture: novel genes we did not even know existed. I will describe our research journey from discovery of new human genes to investigating their role in mammalian evolution; and then onto efforts to sequence the genomes of all life on earth.
