First Annual Sociology Lecture at Royal Holloway, University of London. Speaker: Professor Geoffrey Pleyers Queen's Building Lecture Theatre
The new Department of Geography and Sociology, established in August 2026, is delighted to announce the first Annual Sociology Lecture at Royal Holloway, University of London on Wednesday 28th October 2026 from 4-6pm in Queen’s Building Lecture Theatre. We are pleased to welcome Professor Geoffrey Pleyers, President of the International Sociological Association, who will deliver a lecture entitled ‘The Globalisation of Sociology’. The lecture will be hosted by Professor Sylvia Walby, Director of Sociology Research Group at Royal Holloway.
Sociology is building an analysis of society that is global and equipped to address the challenges of our times. A renewed global dialogue has challenged false universalisms, Eurocentric and androcentric stances in the disciplines, and opened the way for revisiting its history, canons, epistemologies and main concepts. The field is experiencing one of its most stimulating and creative periods as a result of open dialogue with critical perspectives including feminist, intersectional, decolonial and post‑Western approaches, as well as with the epistemologies and contributions of the global East and South alongside Europe.
We warmly invite colleagues, students and members of the wider community to join us for this inaugural lecture and to be part of an important conversation about the future of sociology.
