About This Event

The Politics Behind the Chocolate lecture will be held at York St John University on 31 October 2026. This event will explore the political influences surrounding the Rowntree family, known for their chocolate and social reform efforts. Speakers will discuss the family's engagement with Liberal politics and socialist ideas.

The Rowntree family’s political influences and connections

You may know the Rowntree family for their chocolate, Quaker beliefs or work for social reform. But which political ideas helped shape what they did?

Join us at York St John University on Saturday 31st October for The Politics Behind the Chocolate, our autumn lecture exploring the political ideas, influences and connections surrounding the Rowntree family.

Our speakers will look at the Rowntrees’ involvement with Liberal politics and engagement with socialist ideas, through the changing political landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We’ll explore how these political currents influenced the family’s thinking and work, as well as the influence the Rowntrees themselves had on others.

This event has grown out of research carried out over the summer by one of our interns. Supporting opportunities for people to research, explore and share Rowntree histories is an important part of what we do, and we’re delighted to see this work helping to shape our autumn event.

Use the entrance on the corner of Clarence Street and Lord Mayor's Walk. Further useful information on finding the venue can be found here: Getting to York St John University (https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/find-and-contact-us/).
