The Gainsborough Bath Spa

The Gainsborough Bath Spa occupies two Grade II Listed buildings with distinguished Georgian and Victorian façades in the heart of the World Heritage Site. Named after the artist, Sir Thomas Gainsborough, the luxury hotel is centred around and, uniquely in the UK, has the exclusive privilege of having access to the natural thermal, mineral-rich waters.

1730 – The original building resided Dr Charles Bave, an early proposer of the Bath General Hospital.

1747 – 1786 – The Lower Borough Walls of the building became the Casualty Hospital and Bath City Infirmary and Dispensary

1826 – The two establishments are combined by architect John Pitch, to become the United Hospital, with an entrance on Beau Street. A small chapel is designed by G.P. Manners

1863 – 1864 – The original building is extended and the Albert Wing was added by architect J. E. Gill. The hospital is granted the ‘Royal’ prefix and buildings on Lower Borough Walls, including the Medical Officers Residence (The Old House), the ‘Dissecting Room’, and the ‘Dead House’ are connected by a walkway to the Royal United Hospital (RUH)

1932 – A new RUH is opened in Coombe Park, Bath to replace the buildings on Lower Borough Walls. Bath Technical College occupies the Beau Street buildings until 2005.

2006 – Planning permission is sought for a new 97-bedroom Spa Hotel by the Bath Hotel and Spa Company - a joint venture of the Trevor Osbourne Property Group and CP Holdings Ltd. The development is designed to restore another aspect of Bath’s Spa Culture in the heart of the City’s historic Spa Quarter. The Hotel is named after Sir Thomas Gainsborough, the famed portrait and landscape artist who lived in Bath between 1759 and 1774.
