Ballymacombs More Woman: Iron Age bog preserved human remains

Following the discovery of the remains of a prehistoric individual in October 2023 in bogland near Bellaghy, Co. Derry/Londonderry, National Museums NI (NMNI) were engaged as the organisation responsible for preserving archaeological finds from our past. Confirmed to have lived during the Iron Age, this represents the first authenticated prehistoric bog preserved human remains found in Northern Ireland. Niamh Baker will speak about the discovery and how the museum has been progressing a research programme to find out about the story of Ballymacombs More Woman.

Biography

Niamh Baker has a background working within the museum sector with experience at local authority museums across NI and ROI. She has worked at National Museums NI (NMNI) for eighteen years and held her current post as Curator of Archaeology for the last five years. She is a member of both the Museums Association and the Irish Museums Association and participant in their events to represent the discipline of Archaeology. She completed her Associateship of the Museum Association (AMA), looking at the archaeology collections at NMNI. As well as being a member of the Ulster Archaeological Society and Society of Museum Archaeology and has delivered papers at conferences of both, Niamh currently sits on the Standing Committee for Archaeology at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.
