'Lost Landscapes', Medieval Castle Brom
Castle Bromwich Motte and Bailey: the castle on the Collector Road
Why is it Castle Bromwich? A gentle meander which includes a view of the motte and bailey castle which gives Castle Bromwich its name, the church of St. Mary and St. Margaret, road system and other glimpses of the Middle Ages.
Led by archaeologist Dr Mike Hodder of the University of Birmingham, who has recently completed a detailed report on the excavations at the castle.
Walks take place on Weds. August12th AND Weds September 16th.
Each day has two walks:
11:00 start, lasting about an hour and a half. Meeting in the Courtyard Cafe of the Gardens from 10:30.
14:00 start, lasting about an hour and a half. Meeting in the Courtyard Cafe of the Gardens from 13:30.
Tickets:
£6 (includes general entry), free for Annual Pass Holders but limited spaces available.
Your ticket grants you entry to the Gardens for the whole day, so you may come from the time the gates open at 10:30 and stay until 16:30 if you like. (But don't miss the tour!)
Having had over 30 years of experience in West Midlands history and archaeology, Mike is the perfect individual to allow us to delve into the lives of those living in and around Medieval Castle Bromwich, well before these historic gardens were laid out.
His particular interest in old 'Pimple Hill' as it's known locally, stems from the fact that when he was still at school, he joined in with the original excavation of the site in the 1970s.
Mike will take you through the medieval centuries in a talk designed to reveal the hidden landscapes of pre-Tudor Castle Bromwich, its fascinating history and how this past interacts with our present.
