About This Event

A guided local history walk will be held at Tardebigge Wharf in Birmingham on 19 September 2026. Volunteer guides will discuss canal building and water management. The walk starts at the St Bartholomews Church car park.

Volunteer guides will provide a snapshot of canal building endeavours and explain the aims of water management from the summit of the longest narrow lock flight in Britain. The story of the Wharf and the surrounding landscape is placed into context visiting the current wharf and sites of past quays, quarries, rail tracks, lime kilns and the site of the experimental boat lift, which today is replaced with a double depth lock. Last year it was the site of a major repair and conservation project.
