Join this guided walk to learn more about the Lunar Society and 18th Century Birmingham
Join this guided walk to learn more about the Lunar Society and 18th century Birmingham by following in its members’ footsteps. This pleasant walk takes advantage of some of the more distinctive and attractive aspects of the city and will take about one and a half hours.
Founded around 1765, the Birmingham Lunar Society was an informal group of friends who’s lively meetings and conversations, letters and experiments were to have a global impact on scientific understanding during the late 18th century. The walk will tell the story of the Society’s positive contributions to society, but will also look at some more ambiguous activities, not least how some of its members benefitted from their links to international trade and the growth of the British Empire.
The tour will be guided by Chris Rice, freelance heritage consultant and Lunar Society expert. Chris curated the 2019 James Watt bicentenary exhibition. This guided walk is free and for a small group. Therefore, if you find you booked a place but can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket on Eventbrite so we can give your place to someone else. The walking tour will start at the entrance Birmingham Cathedral.
