A curated walk along Smallbrook Queensway taking in The Sentinels (1969), The Holiday Inn (1967), the Ringway Centre ( 1962) and the Rotunda

Smallbrook Queensway, currently contains the most intact remaining collection of Birmingham’s post war architecture. Smallbrook Queensway, was the first ar of the inner ring road to be developed and with its wide pavements, retail and careful provision for people rather than cars, was completely different to the later ring road development.

The majority of the buildings were designed by James Roberts - Birmingham born and trained. He set up his practice here too, firstly in the Ringway Centre before moving to the Rotunda.

On this walk you will discover first hand Robert’s talents and we will consider the inspirations that lie behind his designs. We will also introduce you to the Richard Seiffart designed Centre City Tower(1975) and the glamorous Norfolk House (1960) with its wavy canopy designed by Hurley Robinson and Son.

The Ringway is under threat of demolition. We will tell you why we are so passionate about saving this, and other buildings of this period.
