Haworth - St Michael and All Angels and the Station and other buildings - *updated*. Tuesday 18 August, 11.00am - 1.30pm
Join Alison for a trip to the Pennine village of Haworth. We'll see both the village centre (famous for its association with the Brontes) and the Victorian industrial area that lies on the eastern side (known as Haworth Brow). Our meeting point will be the parish church, St Michael and All Angels (Grade II, 1879), where we'll begin with a private tour. There has been a church on this site since the medieval period but the present church is mainly a rebuilding by F and T H Healey, although retaining some late medieval/post medieval elements. After a quick look at the churchyard and the buildings adjacent, we'll walk down the famous Main Street and across the river. Here, we'll see the village's most intact surviving mill (Grade II, c.1800 and c.1840) and the railway goods yard before a private tour of the 1860s Worth Valley Railway Station (Grade II, 1867 and 1833), led by a representative of Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. We follow this a short walk through industrial Haworth Brow, seeing some 'at risk' buildings and the back-to-back worker housing that sprung up in the second half of the century.
Please note that Haworth is a typical Pennines village, with steep hills. The village core is at the top of the hill and our walk through the village to the railway station will takepproximately 10-15 minutes (downhill).
KWVR trains run to Haworth from Keighley where there are connections with frequent Northern trains from Leeds and Bradford.
