About This Event

A talk titled Exploring the history of history will be held in Room B.H05 of the Arts Complex in Bristol. The event starts at 10:30 on 10 October 2026. This free session celebrates a 150th anniversary and the opening of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

Join the celebration of our 150th anniversary and the opening of Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus with a series of inspiring events.

The study and teaching of history at Bristol began on the day the University College opened in 1876, when the first Professor of History gave the inaugural public lecture.

Join preeminent academics from the today's 21st century History department for a series of lightning lectures that share the story of the University over the last 150 years, and the ways its diverse communities have shaped the institution. Get to know the Bayeaux Tapestry with Professor Benjamin Pohl; hear from Professor Sumita Mukherjee on migratory patterns from India; uncover fascinating insights into the history of hospital design with Dr Victoria Bates, and learn about the ways colonial rule has shaped identity in Hong Kong with Dr Vivian Kong. With cutting-edge research, fascinating insights, and student-led work on the history of the University, this event demonstrates the very best of Bristol’s history research.

We’ll also be reflecting on the continuing importance of the study of history and humanities more broadly, in universities and within society at large.
