Join us to celebrate our 150th anniversary and the opening of Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus with a series of inspiring events.

In the early 1990s, a pioneering health study aimed to sign up every pregnant mother in Bristol and the former county of Avon. Almost 35 years later, Children of the 90s is one of the world’s largest and longest running health studies, following more than 14,000 Bristol families across three generations.

Founded by Emeritus Professor Jean Golding OBE (DSc 1994, Hon LLD 2013), who remains active in child heath research today at the age of 85, Children of the 90s has grown into a unique treasury of social, biological and behavioral data that is used by researchers the world over.

Together, some 28,000 participants have contributed over a million pieces of data over the course of their lives, and the ongoing study has informed more than 3,000 research papers from academics the world over. This work covers an astonishing range of health issues, from the safest sleeping position for babies in the crib, to the effects of internet use on child mental health. Jean Golding credits Children of the 90s with saving tens of thousands of lives.

Join us for a fascinating series of lightning lectures into some of the study’s key findings, and discover what the future holds for this renowned longitudinal study.

Exploration Zone

You can also visit ‘The Life World of Birth Cohorts’ exhibition at the Fry Building on the Clifton campus between 10 am and 2:30 pm. This exhibition tells the story of Children of the 90s from the perspective of the participants who have made it possible. This is a free, drop-in exhibition.

Celebrating 150 years and the opening of TQEC

This event is part of a public programme of events on Saturday 10 October, to celebrate the University of Bristol’s 150th year and the opening of our new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. The Clifton campus and TQEC will be open throughout the day, with opportunities to explore, discover and celebrate with friends and family. This is a free event and everyone is welcome.
