Join us in celebrating Professor Jon Aning at his Inaugural Lecture in Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building. Living the Dream: Building the Blueprint From What Works to What’s Next in Urological Cancer Abstract: In ‘Living the Dream: Building the Blueprint From What Works to What’s Next in Urological Cancer‘. Professor Jon Aning will reflect on combining a surgical and a clinical academic career driven by a passion to improve outcomes for patients. He will discuss personal highlights, evidence, learning points and turning points along his path to professorship. This inaugural lecture celebrates a journey strengthened through collaboration and teamwork, grounded in listening to patients and sustained by the support of family, colleagues and friends, with a little fun along the way…. Biography: Jonathan Aning is Honorary Professor of Urological Oncology at the University of Bristol and a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI). He specialises in the management of prostate and bladder cancer including robotic surgery and leads the urology research program at the BUI. Jonathan graduated with a B.Med.Sci and BMBS from Nottingham University in 2001. He was inspired to follow a career in Urology after being exposed to the speciality in his basic surgical training. He completed a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in 2010 and the prestigious Uro-oncology fellowship at the Department of Urological Sciences, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2013 before starting practice as a full time consultant in 2014. Jonathan has worked with researchers at the University of Bristol since 2011 and presently serves on the Bristol Cancer Research Network Steering Group. Jonathan has established a programme of work focussing on improving outcomes for urological cancer patients and innovation. He leads research that investigates inequality and targets neglected areas. He is proud to support early career researchers. Jonathan has been shortlisted for several awards including recently the South West Central RRDN – Fostering innovation Award 2026. He achieved 2nd place Leadership in the Inaugural South West NHS Excellence Awards 2026 and was highly commended in the Clinical Excellence Award for Consultants of the Year and the Black Healthcare Awards. Alongside his clinical and research activities, he is the Clinical Lead for Cancer Genomics Research for the South West Genomic Medicine Service and a member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Section of Oncological Urology Board. Jonathan serves as an advisory board member for the Scandinavian Journal of Urology and an editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Urology. He has previously served as the Chair of the British Association of Urology (BAUS) Section of Oncology and Chair of the Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire (SWAG) Urology Cancer Clinical Advisory Group.
