Introducing Public Art at the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus

Join us for an evening of celebration as we unveil three new public artworks by John Wood and Paul Harrison, Ellie Shipman, and Room 13 Hareclive. The new commissions include two permanent installations on the ground floor of the Sloane Robinson Building, alongside a newly commissioned short film.

The evening will include an opportunity to experience the artworks, followed by a panel discussion exploring the ideas, collaborations, and creative processes behind the commissions.

Professor Beth Williamson will be in conversation with artists John Wood and Paul Harrison, Shani Ali of Room 13 Hareclive, and Ellie Shipman, alongside Megan O’Shea, Contemporary Art Society * Consultancy.

This talk forms part of the Autumn Art Lecture Series, which explores the public art programme for the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

About the series

Taking the public art programme for the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) as its starting point, the Autumn Art Lecture series for 2026 will examine how public art can contribute to the identity and character of a place. This series of four events opens a dialogue between art, innovation, heritage and civic identity.

The public art programme for TQEC was developed to embed creativity into the new campus and to encourage creative exchange and connection between the University and the wider city. Three new site-specific public art commissions offer distinctive responses to the new campus and its context, exploring its connections to innovation and industry, the waterways and green spaces that shape the site, and the communities that will define its future. The programme was delivered in partnership with the Contemporary Art Society *Consultancy.

The Autumn Art Lecture series is hosted by the University of Bristol's Faculty of Arts, Law & Social Sciences.

About the speakers

John Wood and Paul Harrison

John Wood and Paul Harrison make works that form a kind of reference manual for how to do, make, build, or draw things that you probably never want to do, make, build, or draw. They do it for you. Even though you didn’t ask them to. This attempt to compile an encyclopaedia of the everyday, started in 1993 after they met at art college.

John Wood (b.1969, Hong Kong) and Paul Harrison (b.1966, Wolverhampton)

Shani Ali

Shani Ali & Paul Bradley, collaborative art duo, are co-founders and artist-educators at Room 13 Hareclive since 2003. They are socially engaged, multidisciplinary artists whose work is collaborative, collective and sited in the public/social realm. Their practice is based on the belief that personal and social change can result from small, quiet shifts realized through making art, dialogue, relationships and situations. They create enabling, democratic and respectful spaces for creativity and people to grow. The Room 13 collective has co-created exhibitions at Tate Exchange, M Shed, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Irish Museum of Modern Art; collaborated with architect Piers Taylor on the RIBA award winning studio building; and supported children to make presentations, including at Cambridge University and Tate Modern.

Ellie Shipman

Ellie Shipman (b. 1989) is an artist based in Bristol. Ellie studied BA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art, UAL, and MSc Sustainable Development at UWE. Ellie is interested in womanhood; community; sustainability; industry and history - exploring what it means to be human through multimedia artworks using textiles, collage and installation. Pieces are often site specific, participatory or interactive - including people in research, process and product. Ellie works with researchers to translate academic ideas into public art and graphic design; hospitals to design spaces and objects for better care; and museums to create interactive artworks which tell a story.
