About This Event

A workshop on the science of happiness will be held at the Sloane Robinson Building, Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus in Bristol on 10 October 2026. The event will provide information about living well. Admission is free.

Join us to celebrate our 150th anniversary and the opening of Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus with a series of inspiring events.

Do you want to be happier? Do you want to help make someone else happier? In the current climate, we often hear that we should optimise self-care, but what if we are our own worst carers? What if there is a simple way to become happier?

In this fascinating talk, Professor Bruce Hood outlines seven lessons for living well. He argues that happiness depends on our sense of self, which will undoubtedly change over a lifetime. As children we tend to be focused on ourselves, and as we develop into adulthood we tend to be more focused on others. But we never entirely abandon our egocentric views, and in so doing we can set ourselves up for misery.

From the negativity bias in our brain and our tendency to ruminate, through to the power of meditation and why it’s so important to discover awe in your life, Bruce Hood delivers fascinating and proactive insights into living well. With practical exercises, he’ll teach you how to manage your mind, deal with adversity, notice the pitfalls, and share ‘happiness hacks’ to change your life for better, for good.

Through his university lecture series, and his latest book The Science of Happiness: Seven Lessons of Living Well (2025), Bruce Hood is challenging the happiness industry, presenting empowering steps we can all take to improve our lives in the pursuit of happiness.
