A Night of Gothic Mystery with Jack Jewers and Jess Kidd is set to occur at Waterstones Argyle Street in Glasgow on 8 September 2026. The event celebrates two new historical mysteries that mix Gothic atmosphere with the bright lights of the city.
Take a journey through the dark past as we celebrate two excellent new historical mysteries that mix Gothic atmosphere with the bright lights of the theatrical world. Seething Lane takes us to London in the deep winter of 1670, where famed diarist Samuel Pepys is called on to investigate the brutal murder of a libertine aristocrat. The trail will lead him from the backstreets of London to the glamorous world of Restoration theatre in a gripping new thriller from award-winning author and filmmaker Jack Jewers. Little Spark is a weirdly wonderful Victorian mystery following Bodkin Bell, a pickpocketing orphan with uncanny electrical abilities, whose chance at a better life may lie in a shadowy manor where a reclusive family of cunning inventors are trying to produce lifelike robotic automata. This new novel from the bestselling author of Things In Jars and The Night Ship is a sumptuous, steampunk delight. Jack and Jess will be in conversation with Sara Sheridan, author of Scottish Book of the Year The Fair Botanists and The Secrets of Blythswood Square, discussing the appeals of historical stories, how they create such atmospheric novels, and their flair for the theatrical, before answering your questions and signing books.
