About This Event

The Heritage Festival featuring "The Badenoch Drovers" is scheduled for 13 September 2026 at Kingussie Parish Church, Inverness. The event includes a book launch detailing the history of the Highland cattle trade, with tickets priced at £9.38.

This book launch sets out the lifeblood of Highland economy for 200 years - an endless stream of black cattle destined for southern markets

Come and enjoy the launch of this new book by David Taylor, copies of which will be on sale and can be signed at the event. David Taylor will expand on the book and the history of droving, which saw black cattle plodding slowly south from their native Highlands.

This was the lifeblood of the Highland economy for two centuries with, at its peak, over 150,000 being sold annually at the Falkirk Tryst. David will talk about how those Badenoch drovers conducted their business - financial transactions, herd management, marketing - but also how dependent the local community was on their integrity and success,

David Taylor spent thirty years teaching history in Kingussie. After undertaking a PhD on Badenoch history with UHI, he has produced two books: The WIld Black Region: Badenoch 1750-1800 (shortlisted for a Saltire Society award, 2016) and The People Are Not There:The Transformation of Badenoch 1800-1863 (Saltire Society History Book of the Year 2023).

The talk will start at 7pm, so please arrive 10 minutes before.

David will also sign copies of his book which will cost £14.00 each and can be paid for at the event with card or cash.

Pre-booking is essential.

We look forward to meeting you at the event!
