The five-week beginners crochet course runs on Tuesday evenings from 6 September 2026 at Studio 4 in Leicester. Costs are £56 to £75 depending on the ticket type. Booking opens on Monday 3 August 2026.
This event will be bookable on Monday 3 August 2026. A five-week introductory course for anyone new to crochet. This friendly and informal course is for complete beginners to give you the confidence to use a pattern and start your first crochet creations. In week one you will receive everything you will need to get you started including a ball of yarn, crochet hook and a few other goodies. To accompany this course, you will receive a new worksheet each week to enable you to practice at home between classes. Week 1: Learn about hooks, yarn weights and yarn packaging, how to hold the hook and yarn, how to create a foundation chain, the double crochet stitch and how to fasten off your work. Week 2: Practice chain stitch and double crochet from Week 1 and learn new stitches – half treble, treble and double treble. Week 3: Practice all stitches learned over Weeks 1 and 2 plus joining yarn, weaving in ends and seaming , understanding abbreviations and mesh pattern. Week 4: Making a ring, working in a spiral and working in rounds. Week 5: Making Granny Squares For fast learners there is also an opportunity to learn basic flowers and increase and decrease methods. About the tutor: Tutor Bonita Keay is a passionate crafter and always says making is part of who she is! She started her handmade business journey in 2007 when her children were small and now sells regularly at craft fairs (including our Attenborough Arts Centre fairs!). Bonita is also an experienced tutor, sharing her knowledge, skills and passion with adults and young people, inspiring creativity and wellbeing wherever she goes. She sources all materials ethically and sustainably, supporting other small businesses where possible. Further information: This 5-week course will run on Tuesday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, starting on 8 September, with the final class on 6 Oct 2026. Participants must be aged 14+. Under 18s must be accompanied by a paying adult at all times. If the course/workshop you’d like to book is sold out, we do operate a waiting list – simply contact our box office team on 0116 252 2455 / arts-centre@le.ac.uk and ask to be added to the waiting list. We’ll then contact you if a place becomes available, with absolutely no obligation to accept it if you’ve made other plans! Please ensure that you read and agree to our updated Terms & Conditions before booking as courses/workshops are non-refundable if cancelled within 21 days of the start date for any reason. We aim to make all our sessions as accessible as possible and carers/PAs are very welcome – just remember to book their free place when you book your session. If you’d like to talk to us in advance of booking or attending your sessions to discuss your access needs, our Box Office team is here to help! We have four blue badge parking spaces outside Attenborough Arts Centre, plus double yellow line roadside parking very close to the building for blue badge holders for up to three hours if our parking spaces are occupied. Free parking for all customers is available after 5pm on weekdays and all day at weekends in the University of Leicester car park next door to Attenborough Arts Centre on Lancaster Road. The closest public car park for parking at all other times is Victoria Park, 5-10 minutes walk from us (near De Montfort Hall).
