About This Event

Southwark Cathedral will host a special guided tour as part of its Lancelot 400 celebrations on September 26, 2026. This event offers insights into the cathedral's history, particularly relating to Bishop of Winchester Lancelot Andrewes, who governed an area including Southwark from 1619. Entry is priced at £9.00.

A special tour as part of Southwark Cathedral's Lancelot 400 celebrations.

As Bishop of Winchester from 1619, Andrewes oversaw a diocese that then included Southwark, and it was during this time that he became closely associated with the area. The Bishop of Winchester’s London residence, Winchester Palace, stood nearby and it was there that Andrewes was staying when he died in 1626. He is the only Bishop of Winchester to be buried in Southwark Cathedral. Though the Cathedral was known as St Saviour’s parish church at the time of his death, his tomb remains here today.

Discover Southwark Cathedral's woven history with the life of Lancelot Andrewes in this special tour as part of our Lancelot400 celebrations.

The tour is 1 hour long.

Please meet by the Welcome Desk via the Millennium Courtyard at Southwark Cathedral.

Spaces are strictly limited so early booking is recommended.
