A Structures Seminar titled Controlling Fracture in Topological Maxwell Lattices is held on 23 October 2026 at the Skempton Building, South Kensington Campus. Dr Leo De Waal explores how geometry and topology influence stress localization and fracture in Maxwell lattices. The talk identifies key geometric parameters governing damage to open pathways for architecting structures that guide and arrest cracks.
Abstract: Can we design structures to control how cracks propagate? In this talk, I explore how geometry and topology influence stress localization and fracture in Maxwell lattices. Through numerical and experimental investigations, we identify key geometric parameters governing damage, opening pathways to architect structures that guide, divert, and arrest cracks. Bio: My research focuses on using geometry to control deformation, damage, and failure in structural systems. I am particularly interested in origami-inspired structures and topological mechanics, with the goal of designing more efficient, resilient, and adaptable structures.
