About This Event

The Road We Share is a live adventure talk scheduled for 16 October 2026 at Campfield in Manchester. The presentation explores two bicycle journeys separated by 40 years, detailing an 18-month, 25,000-kilometre route from England to Australia. The event uses stories, photographs, and film to illustrate the similarities, differences, and unforgettable moments encountered along the way.

The Road We Share: A 40 Year Legacy

In 1984, my dad set off from England on a bicycle with one goal: to reach Australia.

Forty years later, at the same age he was when he made the journey, I decided to follow in his footsteps.

In 2024, I set off from England on the same model and year of bicycle, beginning an 18 month, 25,000 kilometre journey across some of the most challenging and remote parts of the world.

From England through Europe, Turkey, Georgia and Central Asia, into Pakistan and Afghanistan, then on through Nepal and Southeast Asia before finally reaching Australia, the journey became far more than simply recreating my dad's ride.

The Road We Share is a live adventure talk about two journeys separated by 40 years, and the similarities, differences, disasters and unforgettable moments along the way.

Through stories, photographs and film, I’ll take you behind the scenes of the expedition: from learning to ride a motorbike in Pakistan and crossing some of the world's most demanding terrain, to reaching Annapurna Base Camp by bicycle, dealing with breakdowns, border crossings and everything that went wrong along the way.

Alongside my story, my dad will share his memories of making the original journey in 1984, giving a unique perspective on how travel, technology and the world itself have changed over four decades.

The evening will include a cinematic film introducing the journey, a full live presentation, never before seen photographs and stories from both expeditions, followed by a Q&A.

This isn't just a story about cycling from England to Australia.

It's a story about a father and son, two bicycles, one route and a 40 year legacy.
