Course Overview
This one day workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of lino cutting and relief printing. Participants will learn how to develop a simple image, transfer it onto lino, safely use lino cutting tools and produce prints by hand using printing ink and a baren or spoon.
By the end of the day, each participant will have created their own lino block and produced a small series of hand printed images.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
Understand the basic principles of relief printing
Learn how positive and negative space work in lino printing
Develop a simple design suitable for cutting
Learn how to transfer an image onto lino
Safely handle and use lino cutting tools
Understand different lino cutting marks and techniques
Learn how to apply and roll out printing ink
Produce prints by hand using a baren or spoon
Understand the importance of registration and consistent pressure
Produce a small edition of prints from their own lino block
What students need to bring:
All materials will be provided.
Tutor Information:
Adam Hogarth is an artist living in Margate. Adam completed at BA Hons in Northumbria University and an MFA in Fine Art Printmaking at The Royal College of Art. From 2016 to 2020 Adam was the Printmaking Fellow at The Royal Academy of Arts. Adam has a wealth of academic and professional experience, working and exhibiting alongside internationally recognised artists. He is currently a part time Fine Art Lecturer at Medway School of Art.
Adam’s teaching approach caters towards the needs of individuals with an emphasis on nurturing a student’s individual voice.
