Context

Alcohol plays a significant role in many aspects of society, yet alcohol-related harm remains a major public health concern. The physical, mental, and social consequences linked to alcohol dependency result in pressure on healthcare services, particularly for A&E departments, GP practices and mental health services. Alcohol can contribute to a wide range of health conditions, from liver disease, cardiovascular problems and dementia to poor mental health as well as accidents, and injuries. Early recognition and intervention can make a significant difference in reducing these harms and improving outcomes for individuals and communities.

This training provides participants with the knowledge and confidence to better understand alcohol use, recognise the signs of dependent and non-dependent drinking, and identify appropriate support options. It explores the impact of alcohol on individuals, families, and communities, while addressing common misconceptions and the stigma that can prevent people from seeking help.

Learning Objectives:

Explore the values and mission that underpin Change Grow Live

Gain an overview of the support services available for people affected by drug and alcohol use

Learn about the different referral pathways, including professional referrals and self-referrals.

Discover how alcohol units are measured, recommended drinking limits, and why this knowledge is important.

Increase your understanding of stigma and develop skills to challenge it within your community.

Recognise the harmful effects of alcohol and identify the signs of alcohol dependency.

Explore treatment pathways available for both dependent and non-dependent drinkers.
