Mono Processing A Deep Dive in LR with Joe Houghton begins on 14 November 2026 at 10:00 as the first of a five-part series. The workshop teaches how to identify monochrome subjects, convert images with intent, and achieve print-ready results using Lightroom Classic.
MONO PROCESSING A DEEP DIVE' in 5 sessions with Joe Houghton Beyond the Capture A five-part online series with Joe Houghton for the RPS Digital Imaging Group, running fortnightly on Saturday mornings from November 2026 into January 2027. Black and white is not colour photography with the colour removed. It is a different way of seeing, a different set of decisions at the point of capture, and a different craft in the edit. This series works through all three - from learning to spot a monochrome subject before you raise the camera, to converting with intent rather than reflex, to getting a print off the machine that looks like the file on your screen. Each session pairs the thinking with fifty minutes of live editing in Lightroom Classic. Based on Joe's forthcoming book on monochrome photography. The five sessions 1. Seeing in monochrome Saturday 14 November 2026 10am How do you know, before you press the shutter, whether an image will work in black and white? Tonal hierarchy, tonal separation, and the shadow-first approach - then a live conversion that goes to mud, and the rescue. 2. Light, tone and the zone discipline Saturday 28 November 2026 10am Reading a scene in zones, choosing light for what it does to texture and form rather than colour, and what those old yellow and red filters were actually for. Four filter treatments worked on the same landscape. 3. The conversion Saturday 12 December 2026 10am One file, six defensible interpretations. The two-level conversion architecture in Lightroom Classic, the B&W Mix panel channel by channel, and the tone curve. 4. Local control and the finishing tools Saturday 9 January 2027 10am Masking, dodging and burning, luminance range masks and grain. A flat grey landscape rescued live, a round trip to Silver Efex with an honest verdict, and two cases where AI masking gets it wrong. 5. Print, sequence, and a body of work Saturday 23 January 2027 10am Soft proofing, paper choice, and why your printer produces grey with a colour cast. Then fourteen images cut to eight live, with every cut explained. How each session runs Two hours. The first part covers the thinking, with examples on screen, so you know what you are watching for. After a short break, Joe spends the rest of the session live in Lightroom Classic, working real monochrome files and talking through every decision as he makes it. Each session ends with a short exercise to try before the next one. They are deliberately small - one shoot, one file, one hour at the desk - and the next session opens by looking at what people brought back. Sessions are recorded, so a missed date is not a lost session. Who it's for Photographers who already shoot and edit, and who want their black and white work to be better than the button press allows. You do not need to be a Lightroom Classic expert, but the demonstrations use it throughout, so you will get most from the series if that is where you process. The sessions build on each other. You can take any one of them on its own, but they are designed as a progression.
