Helping Clients Relate Differently to Their Inner Critic
Working with the Inner Critic: Practical Therapeutic Strategies
Once we can recognise and understand the inner critic, the next step is learning how to work with it therapeutically.
Simply challenging negative thoughts is not always enough: the inner critic may be deeply embedded, emotionally charged and serving a protective or regulating function. This experiential two-hour CPD workshop introduces practical therapeutic strategies for helping clients relate differently to their inner critic.
Participants will explore approaches for identifying and externalising the critical voice, creating distance from self-critical thoughts, understanding the critic’s underlying fears and intentions, and developing alternative, more supportive ways of responding.
Through guided exercises, case examples and practitioner reflection, participants will build a flexible toolkit that they can integrate into their existing therapeutic approach. The emphasis will be on curiosity rather than confrontation — helping clients move from being dominated by the inner critic to developing greater choice in how they respond to it.
Building on Workshop 1, this second stage of the Taming the Inner Critic journey moves from understanding it to working with it: shifting from insight into practical therapeutic action.
