About This Event

Zoltan Kovary leads a workshop on dreams as creativity in therapy on 17 November 2026. The session examines how integrating dreams helps cope with existential crises. Participants discuss practical examples of successful and unsuccessful dream and art elaborations.

I follow Otto Rank who constructed a creativity based psychology, which means that our main task is to create our individual self within relationships. "Neuroses" or psychological disorders can be seen as failures in creativity. I think that one of the main tools of this self-creation is dreaming and integrating the dream's message after waking up. This is our "everyday creativity" that helps us to cope with existential crises in life. But both dream-work (Freud) and art-work (E. Kris) can be succesful and unsuccesful; in the cases of dreams it leads to nightmares while unsuccesful "sunlimation" leads to self-retraumatizing instead of integration. In the workshop we can examine some practical examples of succesful and unsuccesful elaboration in the history of arts and also the participants can discuss their succesful and unsuccesful dreamworks and artworks in the breakout rooms.
