About This Event

How Bordeaux became Bordeaux: persistence and privilege features a conversation with Woody Powell, an American sociologist, free to attend at Saïd Business School - Park End Street in Oxford.

In conversation with American sociologist, Woody Powell

Woody Powell American sociologist, Professor of Education, Sociology, Organizational Behavior, Management Science and Engineering, and Communication at Stanford University.

The seven-day week, the Ivy League, the British monarchy: some institutions outlast everything history throws at them. This talk tells the story of a stranger case: an 1855 ranking of Bordeaux wines meant to be temporary, which instead survived pestilence, wars, financial crises, and Nazi occupation to shape the global wine trade to this day. New archival evidence suggests its durability rests not on inertia or self-interest alone, but on privilege that persists by continually reinventing itself.
