About This Event

The 12-week workshop in Plymouth supports writers who seek constructive feedback, stronger writing skills and a safe space to develop their work.

A supportive 12-week workshop for writers who want constructive feedback, stronger writing skills and a safe space to develop their work.

Writer’s Workshop: 12-Week Course

Writing can be a solitary process, but developing your work doesn’t have to be.

This supportive 12-week workshop gives writers the opportunity to share their work, receive thoughtful feedback and learn how to offer constructive feedback to others.

Unlike an informal writing group, the workshop will follow clear guidelines designed to create a safe, respectful and encouraging environment. You’ll learn how to assess writing constructively and how to use the feedback you receive to strengthen your own work.

What you’ll develop

Throughout the course, we’ll explore important areas of creative writing, including:

• Characterisation

• Voice and style

• Plotting and story development

• Vivid and effective description

• Managing exposition

• Recognising and reducing overwriting

How the workshop works

Participants will bring a short piece or extract of their own writing to share with the group. Depending on the final group size, everyone will have at least three opportunities to present their work and receive feedback during the course.

Active participation is an essential part of the workshop. Everyone attending will be expected to share their own writing as well as provide supportive feedback to others.

Clear workshopping guidelines will be introduced at the beginning of the course. Participants will be expected to respect the ownership and confidentiality of one another’s writing at all times.
