The workshop 'Destitute Daughters' will take place at Portsmouth Central Library, focusing on unpublished material related to the experiences of impoverished and abandoned girls in Portsmouth. Led by Amanda Garrie, participants will explore stories of those who received help and those who faced challenges in a port city. Amanda Garrie shares unpublished material relating to the plight of Portsmouth's impoverished and abandoned girls, and what became of them.
During the session, we will dive into unpublished materials uncovered by Amanda Garrie, when she was the PCC Library and Archive Service Poet in Residence (2019). She will share fascinating stories of girls who were helped, others who fell foul of the dangers a port city presents, and what happened to them.
This workshop is designed for writers of all abilities, but would also be relevant to those with an interest in local history and/or the age-old plight of women.
Please bring a pencil to write with as pens are not allowed in this area of the library. Large bags, food and drink (including water) must be left in a nearby locker -- so please ask for a key at the desk.
