This relaxed guided experience combines a beautiful Peak District walk with beginner-friendly outdoor sketching, giving you the opportunity to slow down, notice the landscape in a different way and reconnect with your creativity.
No artistic experience is needed. Whether you've never picked up a sketchbook before or you're a regular doodler, this is about enjoying the process - not creating a perfect drawing.
This scenic 5km circular walk explores one of the Peak District's characterful gritstone edges, taking in:
🪨 The dramatic rock formations of Birchen Edge and Gardoms Edge
🌄 Beautiful views across the Derwent Valley
⚓ The famous Three Ships carved into the gritstone
🗿 Historic Nelson's Monument, commemorating Admiral Nelson
🌿 Peaceful woodland and moorland trails
✏️ Several relaxed sketching stops inspired by the landscape around us
We'll pause at a number of beautiful viewpoints and landmarks, giving you time to sketch, take photographs or simply enjoy the surroundings.
As with all Peak & Bloom events, we walk at a relaxed, accessible pace with no one left behind.

What Happens on a Hike & Sketch Walk?
This isn't an art class. It's an opportunity to experience the Peak District differently.
Throughout our time we'll combine walking with gentle sketching stops, encouraging you to slow down, notice the details and capture what catches your eye. There are no expectations, no pressure and no right or wrong way to sketch.
During the walk you'll enjoy:

🤝 Friendly conversation and a welcoming small group
📖 Tips and encouragement if you'd like support with your sketching
Many people leave surprised by how relaxing it feels to combine creativity with walking.
Other Details:
Date: Friday 2nd October2026
Distance: approx 5km
Elevation: approx 128m. This is how much we walk up hill over the route, though not all at once.
Grade and Terrain: Mix of Moderate and Easier Hiking. Mix of footpaths and trails; some sections of the paths will be a little uneven underfoot at times and sometimes you may want to head a few paces off the path to find your perfect sketching angle. A section of elevation (worth it for the views!)
Time: 9.30am start for around 4 (depended on how we want to use our time on the day). Note we will meet by 9.20am to leave at 9.30am.

Who will be your guide?
I’m Sara and I’m an Artist and Hill and Moorland Leader based in West Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District.
Where we'll meet:
We'll be meeting at the Birchen Edge Car Park - NT (google maps).
What to bring:
Your sketch book and preferred sketching or drawing tools.
Hiking boots or shoes with good grip
Snacks or lunch to keep you happy and sustained for around 4/5 hours
Rucksack
Water (at least 1L)
Waterproofs
Warm layers, hat and gloves
A personal first aid kit with any medications or things you'd usually have on you
Optional extras: Walking poles, sit mat, hot drink, extra warm layers to stay warm when we stop to sketch.
Note about Toilets:
There are toilets at the pub near car park you may be able to use. There won't be any along the way after that.
Safety and your participation:
The core hope for my walks is that they are enjoyable and memorable experiences for everyone so we will keep to a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views, learning about the area and being outdoors in nature. You are also responsible for your own health and safety and there can be risks with all outdoor activities. You'll be asked to complete a medical form a couple of days before the walk to let me know of any medical conditions prior to the day. Every participant is required to complete this before the event begins.
I am a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and Outdoor First Aid trained so will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Cancellations and Weather:
This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless I decide that the conditions will be dangerous. If I do have to cancel the walk for safety reasons, I will suggest one mor
