Visit our beautiful 1879 school buildings. Discover the people who shaped the Burton Street, saved it from demolition and shape its present.

Please arrive at our main café at 1:00 PM to begin the tour.

The main café is located on the ground floor of the Burton Building. Once you enter through the main gates, follow the signs to find your way there.

The event starts at 1pm and finishes at 3pm. This is NOT a drop-in event.

Langsett Road School was built in 1879 by Sheffield School Board, one of many beautiful, ornate stone buildings. At the time, it was surrounded by back-to-back housing and heavy industry, and the school educated many of Hillsborough’s poorest children.

In 1976, the last pupils used the school as the nearby houses on Burton Street, Bamforth Street and the surrounding area were demolished. After a few years as a hub for young musicians, the old school buildings lay abandoned and vandalised and were about to be knocked down.

A moment of inspiration by a local man called Jim Taylor and a lot of hard work by him and a group of dedicated volunteers saved the buildings for the community and the old school became a key filming location for The Full Monty in1996.

In 1998, a new chapter at Burton Street began with the start of what is now the Burton Street Foundation, providing essential disability services as well as hosting diverse businesses including Sheffield Boxing Centre and Under the Stars disability arts.

Our 2026 Heritage Open Days tours theme is Everyday Histories and we’ll be finding out about the extraordinary people past and present who have made Burton Street a wonderful place to be! We hope you will join us.

There will also be a display of photographs, film and documents from the Burton Street archive and the Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group www.hillsboroughhistory.co.uk History volunteers will be on hand to answer your questions and you will be able to add your own story to the archive!
