Talking Tartan: A panel discussion on tartan, highland dress, historical clothing and costuming
Join us for a special panel discussion at the birthplace of tartan, Bannockburn!
Friday 18th September, 7:30pm
Tartan as we know it today is an important symbol of Scottish identity the world over, but it was not always so. The demand for tartan exploded in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Wilson & Sons Weavers of Bannockburn positioned themselves to provide the supply. As savvy entrepreneurs they filled military contracts for the Highland Regiments and created one of the first catalogues of tartan. By the 1880s, now a successful businessman, Col. Alexander Wilson purchased Bannockburn House. The legacy of the Wilsons also shaped the community of Bannockburn from a crossroads into a hive of industrial activity.
To carry on our exploration of the origins of tartan, Bannockburn House invites you to join emerging talents in a discussion on tartan, highland dress, historical clothing and costuming. Get a first look at the new Bonnie Prince Charlie costume by student Esther Pape, going on display at Bannockburn House, and hear from guest speakers on their exciting research. Bannockburn House is committed to celebrating fresh faces of emerging talent in history and heritage - so come along and be a part of this celebration!
The panel discussion will be followed by refreshments and snacks available by donation.
