About This Event

David Yeates will share his personal journey from Wigan to Atlanta at Wigan Library on 10 October 2026. The event recounts his discovery that his father was a Black American GI stationed at Burtonwood Air Base and his 2002 trip to meet him. Admission is free.

What if you discovered that half of your family was on the other side of the Atlantic?

For David Yeates, that discovery led to an extraordinary journey from Ashton-in-Makerfield to Atlanta.

Growing up in the 1970s, David knew he was different but didn't understand why. In adulthood, he learned that his father was Steve Belcher, a Black American GI stationed at Burtonwood Air Base.

Then, in 2002, David travelled to Atlanta to meet his father for the first time.

Join us for From Wigan to Atlanta, as David shares his personal story of identity, family, discovery and belonging.
