Medical Educator Development Programme

Welcome to our exciting event focused on enhancing your skills as a medical educator! Join us at the West Downs Centre at the University of Winchester!

This is a one day course for doctors and medical students at any stage of their careers, to understand the fundamentals of facilitating learners, and delivered by the reknown Professor Johnny Lyon-Maris, the Medical Director of GP Training and Registration at the Royal College of General Practitioners, and Senior Clinical Advisor for NHS England. Prof. Lyon-Maris has 26 years of experience in the field of post-graduate medical education.

The course will be learner led, please bring along your questions and they will be covered by the end of the day. The sessions will be interactive and small group work so please expect to speak and discuss rather than sit and listen. We will cover the following topics during the day:

Ice-breakers – why we do them and varying types for different situations

How to get the most from your learner

Making feedback developmental and frameworks for feedback

An introduction to how people learn and learning styles, and adapting to that style

Support and challenge

Competence vs competence of your learners

Where to go when you have concerns

Virtual vs in-person facilitated learning for one to one or in groups

A theme of facilitating groups will run throughout the day

This counts towards 12 CPD from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the course contents are part of Academy of Medical Education accredited Plus PG Cert course.

Fulfil the UK Foundation FPC 10 (Teach the Teacher) criteria:

IMT: 1 point

ACCS: 1 point

CST: Indicator D

Radiology: 2 points

Histopathology: 1 point

Ophthalmology: 0.5 points.

If you need more than 2 days training, please let the team lead know on that day and we will guide and signpost you the different achievable ways suited for you.

Lunch and refreshments are provided.
