Two different films created from identical footage - exploring authorship, memory, temporality and affect in the representation of grief.

It Was a Tuesday, I Think (Hay, 2026) and Passing (Stone, 2026) are two independently authored films, but they have been created from identical source material. The two filmmakers – Jimmy Hay (Bristol) and Rob Stone (Birmingham) – have radically different relationships to the footage: Jimmy has intimate, embodied memory of the real-life events the films depict, while Rob has created through pure interpretation.

This screening marks the first time both filmmakers will see each other's version.

Screening both films together, this event opens up questions of authorship, memory, temporality and affect in the representation of grief — and asks what a dual-edit methodology can reveal that a single film cannot.

There will be a discussion and Q&A, hosted by Dr David Fleming (Stirling), exploring what it means to make editorial decisions with — and without — the weight of lived experience behind them.
