The Embassy of Spain and The James Joyce Cultural Centre are delighted to bring the extraordinary Karlik Danza Teatro, from Cáceres, Spain, and their production of Lucia Joyce, a small drama in motion , written by Itziar Pascual with direction and dramaturgy by Cristina D. Silveira, on Sunday, 18 October 2026 at 7.30pm at the Samuel Beckett Theatre . The life of James Joyce’s daughter, Lucia, is a fictionalized secret. Even her leading scholars have had to combat the intentional destruction of numerous letters, reports, and documents. Lucia was a passionate woman who devoted herself to creativity. She lived through the birth of modern dance but also suffered the fierce legacy of the James Joyce and the Joyce family, marked by exile, economic instability, talent, psychological suffering, and emotional devastation. Her story speaks of the difficult coexistence with a genius when a woman’s role is merely to be a muse, not an artist. In “Lucia Joyce, a small drama in motion”, we want to pay tribute to all those female artists silenced by the geniuses of patriarchal society. At the same time, we take a brief journey through the birth of modern dance, with references to artists such as Margaret Morris, Martha Graham, Mary Wigman and Pina Baush. With a theatrical tribute combining dance, theatre and audiovisual elements, we bring the audience closer to the short story and drama of Lucia Joyce, daughter of the author of ‘Ulysses’. Cristina D.
