Galway Oyster Festival and Galway Atlantaquaria invite you to a guided walk for all ages, along the rockpools of Grattan Beach, Salthill.

Fragments of Our Past - Oyster Shore Walk on Grattan Beach, Salthill

Come join us for a fun and educational shore walk on Grattan Beach guided by Galway Atlantaquaria , where we will celebrate the native oyster (Ostrea edulis), search for oysters and shells and learn about this keystone species while we enjoy the beauty of Galway Bay.

Native oysters create a physical habitat for other fauna and supports biodiversity (meaning it helps many other species in the sea).

Our experience will:

Highlight the vulnerability of the Bay and its Oysters to threats like Ocean Acidification and Marine Litter.

Show what we can do to preserve it! As part of the experience, we will have a Clean Coasts Beach Clean.

Inspire! Participants will engage in an 'Explore Your Shore Bivalve Survey'. We will try to collect the Oyster Fragments that lie in the rockpools, count them, find fossils, and learn how much life lives in the Bay.

Have fun! We will have a great day exploring the rockpools and learning so much more about biodiversity, and how we can ensure the Oyster lives on forever.

Health and Safety:

Outdoor Event - so wellies and weather-ready clothing are necessary.

Ideal for small children and adults. Children must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

(Note that the area is covered in loose stones and seaweed so is not suitable for the those with reduced mobility).

Please Note - there are no public toilets on Grattan Beach.
