Language, lascars and loos is a free event hosted at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow on 6 October 2026. The session examines early 20th-century life and work in the city. It uses a 1920s toilet sign as a focal point for the discussion.
What can a 1920s toilet sign tell us about living and working in Glasgow in the early 20th century?
Glasgow Museums has recently acquired an enamelled metal sign from a squatting toilet in Govan Graving Docks – come along to see this latest addition to our collection relating to South Asian mariners, commonly known as “lascars”, and their working lives.
ACCESSIBILITY: The Riverside Museum has a ground floor and a mezzanine with lift access between floors. The venue has accessible toilets, a changing places toilet, wheelchairs to borrow, a quiet space, sensory kits and a hearing loop. If BSL interpretation or audio description would be helpful please let us know. It can take time to book interpreters so as much notice as possible is very much appreciated. If we can do anything to make the event more comfortable and accessible for you please contact us to let us know.
