COURSE CONTENT

• Regulations and Standards: UK health and safety legislation, Building Regulations, and MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) standards.

Solar PV Technology: Operating principles of solar cells, panels, string inverters, microinverters, and DC optimizers.

System Design & Siting: Assessing roof orientation, pitch, shading, structural integrity, and calculating expected energy yield.

Electrical Integration: Understanding DC and AC circuits, isolation requirements, overcurrent protection, and grid connection rules (G98/G99).

Installation & Commissioning: Practical mounting techniques, wiring arrays, testing insulation resistance, polarity, and safe energization

Fault Finding & Maintenance: Diagnosing system drops, component failures, and performing routine system servicing.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To enrol onto the BPEC Domestic Solar PV Installer course, you must be a competent, qualified electrician. Entry requirements typically mandate holding a Level 3 NVQ/Diploma in Electrical Installation (or equivalent craft qualification) and a Level 3 Award in the current edition of the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations (18th Edition).

To secure a spot on the course, you are required to provide evidence of:

Core Electrical Qualification: An N/SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (Buildings and Structures), or an Approved Electrician/JIB Gold Card. Stand-alone technical certificates without practical competency assessment are generally not accepted.

Wiring Regulations: A valid Level 3 Award in the requirements for electrical installations, typically BS 7671: 2018 (18th Edition).

Equivalent Experience: Some institutions may accept demonstrable experience alongside an older craft qualification, such as an SVQ 3

AWARD

To gain the BPEC Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar PV Sysems, you must successfully pass two distinct assessments:

Multiple-Choice Exam: A closed-book theoretical exam covering regulations, design theory, and safety

Practical Assessment: A hands-on test demonstrating safe isolation, physical installation, inspection, and commissioning of a live PV system.
