About This Event

Injury in Elite Sport: Monitoring, Understanding and Impacting Based on his applied research in injury prevention, the lecture aims to explore how evidence generated in real-world sporting environments can be translated into meaningful improvements in athlete welfare. The lecture will showcase clear progression from understanding the fundamental problem, identification of mechanisms and risk factors associated with injury, and developing and evaluating effective approaches to optimise athlete welfare. Central to this work is a commitment to provide relevant research that bridges the gap between scientific evidence and the practical realities of working with athletes. Throughout this work is a focus on understanding how research can be implemented effectively within the complexity of elite sporting environments. Biography Ian’s research focuses on understanding the determinants of musculoskeletal health and injury in sport, with the overarching aim of improving injury prevention strategies, recovery, and athlete health. Over the past 15 years, Ian has established an internationally recognised research portfolio spanning musculoskeletal physiology, injury epidemiology, bone biology, and athlete health. Ian was awarded Nottingham Trent University Researcher of the Year in 2024. In addition, he has secured more than £1.5 million in external research funding, including over £1 million as Principal Investigator, and published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals, including the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine, Bone, and the Journal of Applied Physiology. Ian leads the English Football Association’s national injury surveillance programmes across men’s, women’s, and grassroots football, alongside the Premier League injury surveillance programme. These programmes provide one of the world’s largest longitudinal datasets on injury occurrence and burden in football, generating unique insights into injury mechanisms, risk factors, and prevention.
