Kate Blakemore leads an online workshop on 27 November 2026 to support practitioners in understanding the lasting impact of domestic abuse on survivors' confidence, identity, and emotional wellbeing. The session focuses on recovery and providing trauma-informed therapeutic support. Tickets cost from £1.00.
This workshop has been inspired by the recognition that the impact of domestic abuse does not always end when the relationship or situation ends. For many survivors, the journey afterwards can be complex, with the effects of abuse continuing to influence their confidence, identity, relationships, sense of safety and emotional wellbeing.
As therapists and practitioners, we may work with clients who do not necessarily present saying, *“I need support to recover from domestic abuse.”* Instead, they may come to us experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma responses, difficulties with trust, guilt, shame or a loss of identity. Understanding the context of domestic abuse and its lasting impact can help us provide therapeutic support that is compassionate, trauma-informed and centred around the individual's own recovery.
What makes this workshop unique is its focus on **recovery**. Rather than concentrating solely on recognising the signs of domestic abuse or responding to an immediate crisis, we will explore what happens next. We will consider how we can walk alongside survivors as they begin to rebuild their lives and reconnect with themselves.
Together, we will explore:
* The lasting emotional and psychological impact of domestic abuse
* How abuse can affect identity, self-esteem, confidence and decision-making
* Trauma responses and the importance of creating emotional and relational safety
* Understanding shame, guilt and self-blame
* Supporting clients to rebuild trust in themselves and others
* The challenges of leaving and why recovery is not always a straightforward journey
* Therapeutic approaches and practical tools to support healing and recovery
* Boundaries, empowerment and helping clients rediscover their voice
* The importance of working at the client's pace and avoiding unintentionally recreating feelings of powerlessness
This will be a compassionate and reflective space, offering both learning and practical insight. Participants will be encouraged to consider how domestic abuse can continue to show up in the therapy room and how we, as practitioners, can offer support that helps survivors move beyond simply surviving towards rebuilding a life that feels safe, meaningful and their own again.
