Irish Language Shorts – Waterford International Film Festival 2026

Celebrate the richness, history and continuing importance of the Irish language with a special programme of five short films at the 20th Waterford International Film Festival.

Featuring stories told primarily through Irish, alongside films that move between Irish and English, this programme brings together drama, documentary and personal storytelling rooted in Irish culture and identity.

The programme opens with Agus Ní Dúirt muid tada (And We Said Nothing), followed by Alfie Hale, a documentary with a local SETU connection, and Clíodhna, a drama following a young woman considering leaving Ireland for work.

History of Irish explores the decline of the Irish language during the 19th century and its continuing influence, offering an insight into the history and significance of our native tongue.

The programme concludes with ÉIST, a moving short film starring acclaimed Irish actor Stephen Rea.

A celebration of Gaeilge, Irish storytelling and contemporary filmmaking, this is a special opportunity to experience five distinctive films connected by language, culture and identity.
